Logitech G203 Prodigy Review – Cheap Gaming Mouse

Introduction

If you do not have enough money to buy a high end gaming mouse, this Logitech G203 Prodigy review is for you. However, do not let the low price fool you because this mouse has many admirable features, which we will discuss in the upcoming sections. For just $30, or even less on certain marketplaces, you can own this gaming mouse and see what it can do for you.

The looks of this mouse may be slightly misleading as it looks like something that you would use for regular office work. And perhaps you can. The design is simplistic and in tech, we know that the simpler the better. Even if it is sold at this affordable price, this mouse still performs many, if not all, of the functions that the higher priced gaming mice perform. This is for sure not a flamboyant gaming mouse, but when it comes down to selecting weapons for your game, you will be glad you bought it.

You will also notice that the Logitech G203 Prodigy is styled to be an ambidextrous mouse. It can be used effectively (or perhaps not so effectively) by both the right handed and left-handed people. However, you should note that it only has thumb buttons for right-handed people.

Logitech G203 Prodigy Review – Features That You Will enjoy Using In This Mouse

This is a medium-sized mouse, not too big and not too small either so as to be uncomfortable for your hands. It measures 4.6 by 2.4 by 1.5 inches. Unlike other gaming mice that are over 5 inches long and thus mostly fitting for people with big hands, this one can be used by just anyone.

Design

Logitech G203 Prodigy Design

The ergonomic design ensures that you can use it for a long time without your wrist tiring up. The left and right click buttons are hollowed, perhaps to enable you to use the mouse in claw-style. Whatever the case, you will like the two buttons. They have minimal tension and they respond fast.

You will love the one button placed right beneath the scroll wheel. This is for on the run changing of the DPI settings. Just a single click will increase the DPI by 200, all the way to 6000. This button is easily accessible, yet it is not obtrusively big as to look unsightly. There are two buttons on the inner side of the mouse (if you are right handed). Don’t worry about them, because they are designed to stay out of the way, yet they are easily accessible when you need to use them.

Cord

As you may have seen in any other Logitech G203 Prodigy Review, this mouse comes with a 6-foot long rubber cord, and a USB connector at the end. This length is flexible enough for just about any distance that you would like to do on your gaming desk. You can pass it under the desk so that it gets out of the way, or just place it any way that you feel it is good enough for you. Although it is not a braided cable, it is built to last a long time and it responds fast when you pull or push.

Colors

Logitech G203 Prodigy Color

When you plug the mouse into your computer, the Logitech logo lights up in LED. Of course, you can switch off the LED lighting if you do not like it. There is also a strip that goes halfway around the mouse. That lights up too! Although you cannot program the logo and the strip colors to your taste, they do light up nicely all the same.

Software

Logitech G203 Prodigy Software

You could just plug in this mouse and get straight to using it. However, what joy is there if you can program anything? That is why you should install the Logitech gaming software app.

It is free after all, and it will enable you to customize your mouse to your tastes. Through the app, you will be able to program the mouse buttons, have a different profile for each game. And that is not all! The software will scan your computer to find all the games that you have installed.

You can then set up the mouse buttons as well as keyboard keys for different games. These will be stored on the Prodigy G203’s onboard memory. If you change computers, you just need the mouse alone to access all of your gaming profiles.

You can set the DPI settings up to 8000, some resources say 6000 but tell you what, you will not need to go to the highest setting since the mouse performs poorly at that. Besides, you just need a DPI of about 4000 for any game. Mostly, if you set the DPI any higher than 4000, the mouse starts acting jittery and might track poorly.

Scroll wheel

Logitech G203 Prodigy Scroll wheel

In any Logitech G203 prodigy review, you will see that the scroll wheel raises a heated debate. Some people swear against it and others swear on it. However, there is always three sides to a story and for this scroll wheel, the truth is that it is very nice for gaming, for selecting your weapons and so on.

However, it is a bit poor for other functions because it feels a bit clunked up. The texture of the wheel is not too pleasing either. But if you do not use the scroll wheel every few minutes, it should work for you just fine.

Performance

Logitech G203 Prodigy Performance

When rubber meets road, so to speak, it is when you know what a gaming mouse is made of. Compared to standard mouse, this one tracks 8 times faster meaning that it is almost as if your hand is in sync with your computer. Although it comes with a rubber cable, there is no noticeable drag. That, plus the minimal weight of 110 g (ok, we know others come with lesser weight but) this is still very manageable.

Because almost every feature for this mouse is customizable, you stay more in control of your mouse performance. For example, you can adjust the LED lighting colors, with a choice of up to 16.8 million, you will be spoilt for choice. You can also save your game setting on the mouse’s onboard memory to use on any other computer, without having to do the settings again.

The grip

Take note of the size because this mouse is smaller than most. In that case, people who have bigger hands can develop wrist cramps faster. However, it feels very light, thanks to the thin but strong plastic casing.

This mouse lacks strips on the sides, as we have seen in other gaming mice. That may raise the question of whether you will still be able to control it when your palms sweat. It is smooth all round but so far, most users complain about the size.

At the beginning of this Logitech G203 review, we said that this mouse can be used by both right handed and left handed people. Well, that is correct. However, if you are left-handed, you will not have the benefit of the two thumb buttons since they are on the opposite side.

Logitech G203 Prodigy Review: Pros

  • It is very easy to set up – the software is self-explanatory even for first-timers
  • Wide customizability makes it a good mouse for different games
  • Onboard memory to store game settings is indeed a thoughtful addition
  • The price of the G203 is quite a steal
  • LED  light is customizable and can also be switched off if you don’t want it
  • All of the mouse buttons are very responsive
  • It is sold with a warranty of 24 months
  • The depressed right and left click buttons enable you to maintain a firm grip without the buttons getting in the way
  • The mouse glides ever so smoothly on your gaming pad
  • The mouse is very accurate and tracks without hiccups

Logitech G203 Prodigy Review: Cons

Everything has its good side and downside too, and the Logitech G203 is not any different. Here are its cons:

  • Too small for people with big hands
  • Although it is styled to be ambidextrous, there are no thumb buttons for left-hand people
  • No braided cord

Conclusion

In this Logitech G203 Prodigy review, you have seen almost all of the features that this gaming mouse comes with. Granted there are better mice out there. But they cost much more! You can save money and have a great gaming mouse in the name of the G203. Despite the few hiccups that you will experience when using this mouse, you will love it. Besides, the onboard memory to keep your game settings is a trendsetter, isn’t it? Enjoy!
